Why I Believe Recruiters Should Be Marketing Geniuses (And Most Aren’t)

When I first got into recruitment, I thought my job was simple: find someone with the right skills, set up an interview, and hope the hire works out. Easy, right? Well… not really. Over time, I realized that recruitment is less about checking boxes on a CV and more about attracting people the way brands attract customers.

Think about it. Top talent isn’t just waiting around for job ads—they’re busy, selective, and probably have multiple options. If you want to stand out, you need to market your company, your team, and even yourself in a way that feels real and appealing. That’s where my marketing experience comes in.

When I worked on hiring for a cruise ship crew, I didn’t just post a generic job listing. I told a story—about the lifestyle, the opportunity to travel, and the sense of community onboard. I shared photos and short videos showing the crew’s daily life, not just stock images. The result? Over 30 applications in a week, and we hired 20 people who were genuinely excited to join. That’s marketing in recruitment: showing the experience, not just the role.

Another example was when I recruited hairdressers for a salon. Instead of just posting “We’re hiring,” I created content that highlighted team culture, growth opportunities, and real success stories from current employees. People responded to the authenticity. It felt less like applying for a job and more like joining a movement.

Even small things matter. Sharing social proof—like employee testimonials or stories about how someone grew within the company—can make a huge difference in who decides to apply. Engagement isn’t just about likes on social media; it’s about making people feel seen, understood, and excited about working with you.

For me, marketing and recruitment have become inseparable. Every time I approach hiring, I’m thinking: Who am I trying to reach? How do I tell the story? How do I make this irresistible to the right people? Treating recruitment like marketing doesn’t just fill positions—it builds teams full of motivated, inspired people.

So, if you’re a recruiter who thinks posting a job is enough, here’s a secret: it isn’t. Recruitment is marketing, storytelling, and human connection all rolled into one. And when you get that right, the right people won’t just apply—they’ll want to stay.

Recruit Smarter.

Market Louder.
